Northampton College courses are not just for students progressing straight from school.
Perhaps you have been out of education for some time, working, raising a family or simply deciding what to do next. Perhaps you are looking to change direction in your career or achieve the degree you missed out on when you were younger. If so, our Access to Higher Education courses could be for you.
Who are Access courses for?
These full-time study programmes are all specifically designed for mature students. Whether you need to return to a subject you struggled with at school or want to start exploring a brand-new area, you will find our friendly, approachable staff members are experts in helping you change direction. If you are aged 19+ and have had a year out of education post 18, you may also be eligible.
We have four specific pathways:
- Access to Health Professions
- Access to Science
- Access to Social Science
- Access to Medical Science
Each of these pathways offers a route into many different professions and will equip you with the subject knowledge and study skills required for University.
Do not worry if you do not have any formal qualifications – our guidance team will be delighted to help you find the best option for you.
Preparing for your Access programme
If you would like to study an Access to Higher Education course but haven’t got the necessary GCSE grades, our Skills Centre NC Maths and English programmes are ideal. They are suited to adults who have been out of education for some time and who need to re-learn how to study at a higher level before progressing onto the intensive Access programme.

Funding
If you are over the age of 24, you can apply for a student loan, funded by the Government, to pay for the cost of your Access course.
