subway challenge 2020A group of Northampton College students are hoping to see their money-saving meal deal sold in Subway stores across the region having reached the finals of a search for the ultimate lunchtime snack.

Level Three business students Milena Chiruta, Mihail Spinu, Daniils Karpovs and Yusuf Litt have created a bespoke sandwich as part of the Subway Challenge ' an annual hunt for an innovative new snack that encourages students to sharpen their business skills.

Their Savers 10' meal deal features a 6in hearty Italian sub filled with chicken, cheese, mayonnaise and lettuce alongside three cookies, a packet of crisps and a soft drink.

The students plan to promote the £4.49 meal deal using a mixture of outdoor advertising, posters, flyers and an intensive social media advertising campaign on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

Milena, aged 19, said: We wanted to come up with a meal deal that had 10 components to mark the 10th anniversary of the Subway Challenge. We carried out extensive market research to come up with the right sub and really enjoyed the chance to learn more about social media advertising.

Our meal deal is aimed primarily at students and includes a deal with Unidays where students can get 10 per cent off but we are also keen to attract anyone keen to keep an eye on the cost of their lunch. We want to encourage people to enjoy the taste of saving money.

The Savers10 meal deal will go up against with other subs created by students from across the East Anglia region. The winning sub will be sold in stores for a two-week period, with the winning students getting involved in a marketing campaign to promote the product.

Business lecturer Karin Keir-Bucknall said: We are thrilled to see our students shortlisted for the final. It has been a fantastic opportunity for them to put their business skills to the test and they have really taken the project to their hearts, working hard to create a compelling product and devise an effective marketing plan to promote it.

The teams will now present their sub and full marketing plan at a Dragons Den style pitch' event to a panel of Subway franchisees and marketing executives at Cambridge University on Wednesday, February 12. The winners will receive £1,000 worth of Amazon vouchers.
