The level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning is a one-year part time course running one evening a week and is for those who wish to gain an understanding of the of the knowledge skills and behaviours required when working in Teaching Assistant role with children or young people in schools or college environments. You will be required to spend some time in a school or college environment where you can put your new knowledge and skills into practice. This can be voluntary as a placement or where you are already employed. There are 11 mandatory units that cover topics including Safeguarding, Understanding Children and Young People?s Development and Supporting Positive Behaviour.

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is for those wishing to work in schools or colleges as a teaching assistant or those already working in schools and wishing to gain a Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification for their role.

  • How is the course assessed?

    This qualification is assessed internally through written coursework using a range of methods which could include; written assessment, designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board.

  • General info

    This qualification is for adults and is not part of Education Programme for Young People. Learners will need to complete a DBS to volunteer in a school or college placement. There are 11 mandatory units to complete.

  • Entry Requirements for new students
    • You must have evidence to show us that you have achieved Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above which must include English and Maths and you should be working or volunteering within a school classroom setting. You will be contacted once you apply, and asked to provide evidence (copies of your certificates), prior to enrolment. If you do not have a school placement the college may be able to help you to secure one once you have started the course.

    We recommend that you attend one of our exciting open events so that you can look around the department, the college and meet the tutors. You are welcome to do this before or after you apply.

    These events have proved very successful in ensuring students and their families see the best of what the college has to offer such as our inspirational teaching areas, teachers, library facilities and places to eat.

    Once you have applied our experienced Enrolment Team will consider your application carefully and will let you know, by email, if the College would like to make you a conditional offer based on you meeting the specified entry requirements. If your predicted grades or career aims suggest that an alternative subject area or course level would be more appropriate for you at this stage, we will contact you either by telephone, email or text. If you have told us that you have some additional support needs we will contact you to find out more so that we can help you.
