English Language A Level will enable you to develop an understanding of the concepts and methods appropriate for the analysis and study of language. You will apply these as you explore examples of language in use, engage creatively and critically with a varied programme for the study of English and develop your skills as producers and interpreters of language. You will independently investigate language in use.

What will I study?
You will study four main components:
Language variation. Why and how does language vary for different times, situations and audiences Child language. Language acquisition in children Investigating language. Select your own research area Crafting language. Demonstrate your skills in a genre that you have researched.

How is the course assessed?
Three written exams at the end of the second year of the course as well as one piece of coursework, which is a piece of writing with commentary.

This course has become a popular, academically prestigious qualification and is ideal for most academic disciplines as it unites elements of the social sciences, humanities and creative subjects while requiring close analytical study of text. English Language can lead to a variety of degrees and career paths, including speech therapy, publishing, journalism, teaching, marketing, human resources and advertising. Additionally, for students who are keen to study English at university, taking English Language with English Literature is a favoured combination.

Entry Requirements for new students
The required point score to join our A Level programme is 4.25 across all your GCSEs. This must include a minimum of 5 grade 5s or above including a grade 5 or above in English Language and maths, with a grade 6 in another written subject desirable. An average point score will be calculated across your GCSE grades.
A BTEC qualification at Merit grade, or above, in a related subject may also be considered in exceptional circumstances.
All applicants will be invited for interview.
