The Level 3 National Extended Diploma is equivalent in size to three A Levels. This qualification is recognised by industry as providing an excellent base as it includes elements of mechanical, electrical and electronics skills. This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of Electronic Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 National Extended Diploma technical qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. After successfully achieving this qualification, you can progress onto a Higher National Certificate, a Higher Apprenticeship, University or employment.

  • What will I study?

    The units you will study in year 1 are likely to include the following

    Core mandatory units: Engineering Principles Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team Engineering Product Design and Manufacture Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering

    Specialist units: Electronic Devices and Circuits Electronic Measurement and Testing of Circuits PLCs

    In year 1 students must complete all units in order to progress to year 2. The units you will study in year 2 are likely to include the following

    Mandatory units: A Specialist Engineering Project Microcontroller Systems for Engineers Calculus

    Specialist units: Further Maths Electrical Machines Analogue Electronic Circuits Digital and Analogue Electronic Systems Industrial Robotics

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is ideal if you have an interest in the technical aspects of General/Electronic Engineering and wish to gain a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

    The course is aimed at those who wish to either gain entry to University or those who wish to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable them to work in the industry.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Some units are assessed externally with exams (Engineering Principles - Year 1 January, Engineering Design - Year 1 May, Microcontrollers - Year 2 May) Most units are assessed internally with assignments, between 3 and 5 per unit. There are strict deadlines for completion of assignments throughout the year.

  • Your Study Programme

    If you are aged 16-18, you will join a Study Programme this could be a vocational or technical qualification. We will make sure you are working at the right level on your core qualification and are challenged to achieve the highest level of qualification you can.

    Work experience will be part of your study programme and will complement your college study and prepare you for employment. You will also get involved in activities to help you develop life skills and to build your confidence so you can make progress in your career.

    If you have chosen to study for a T Level qualification, this will involve college-based theory and practice lessons along with relevant work placement to enable you to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours that employers are looking for.

    Weekly timetables will include tutorial support which may comprise of full group activities or one to one sessions to discuss individual progress or support needs.

    All students will continue to improve their maths and English and if you don't have a grade 4 at GCSE, we will work with you towards achieving that goal (subject to specific entry requirements for particular courses).

  • General info

    Students will be expected to purchase some basic equipment relevant to the course. This will be conveyed to them in the form of a kit list, sent via email during the summer before they enrol.

  • Progression and Career Opportunities

    On successful completion of this qualification students could continue their studies to a HNC in Engineering on a part time basis or by applying to University for a relevant degree programme. Or employment as an engineering technician. Specific areas of work could include specialist areas such as:

  • Entry Requirements for new students

    Four GCSEs at Grade 9-4 including English and maths.

    Current Level 2 Engineering students will require:

    • Pass at Level 2
    • 90% attendance
    • Good behaviour record
    • GCSE in maths and English at grade 4
