This dynamic course will help you determine your area of specialisation within Art and Design, boost your confidence, and prepare you for UAL Extended Diplomas, specialised apprenticeships, or employment opportunities.
Throughout the course you will explore a variety of specialisms linked to industry expectations, including drawing, printmaking, fine art, photography, 3D design, painting, time-based elements, portfolio development, contextual research and critical & reflective writing expanding.
You will receive guidance and support as you engage in internally set and assessed projects.
Each project offers opportunities to enhance your literacy and numeracy skills, and students who have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 in Mathematics and/or English will re-sit these qualifications alongside their UAL qualification.
A UAL Level 2 is equivalent to four GCSEs at Grades 9-4. Upon completion of this course, you will receive a Level 2 UAL Award & Diploma in Art and Design

How is the course assessed?
On the UAL Award & Diploma in Art and Design students will take a total of eight units to complete the qualification. All work is internally set and assessed and unit 8 is externally moderated by the exam board.
All units are graded and students are required to achieve a minimum of a pass in each unit to achieve the full qualification grade.
Units 1 - 7 are awarded at a pass grade only.
Unit 8 provides the overall qualification grade either P (Pass), M (Merit), D (Distinction).

We will empower you to work at the right level for your core qualification and encourage you to strive for the highest qualification you can achieve.
You will take charge of improving your maths and English skills. If you dont yet have a grade 4 at GCSE, well support you in reaching that goal, while ensuring you meet any specific entry requirements for your chosen courses.
Work experience will be a key part of your study programme, allowing you to apply your learning in real-world settings and prepare for your future career.
Youll also engage in activities that help you build essential life skills and boost your confidence, setting you on a path to progress in your career.
Your weekly timetable will include tutorial support, offering both group activities and individual sessions to discuss your progress and any support you may need.

General info
Students will be expected to purchase some basic equipment relevant to the course. This will be conveyed to them in the form of a kit list, sent via email during the summer before they enrol.
There may be opportunities to go on trips throughout the year, the cost of these will be discussed with students ahead of time.

Progression and Career Opportunities
A UAL Level 2 Diploma provides a good grounding to go on to more advanced courses such as UAL Level 3 Diplomas in:
- Art and Design
- Fashion and Clothing
- Photography
- Digital Design
- Illustration
- Media
You could also consider apprentiships, other training schemes or employment.
To progress to any Level 3 course you will need to achieve UAL Level 2 Diploma with a Pass Grade or above and GCSE English (or equivalent) at Grade 3 or above.

Entry Requirements for new students
4 GCSEs Grade 3 incl. Art & portfolio showing ability to draw/develop ideas. This can include GCSE Art & work from home (if not taking GCSE Art - 4 GCSEs at 3 plus a portfolio as above). The level of course will be based on the quality of artwork.
