I am here and experiencing college first hand and here are a few things I’ve discovered after my first few weeks in the second year at Northampton College.

I’ve had a wonderful time here so far studying journalism and this year is possibly the most fun I’ve had, with teachers making all of the lessons really enjoyable.

Here are my top tips for making the most of your time at Northampton College

The importance of friends

Make friends on your course. You really will need their support as college can get stressful and you won’t be able to survive if you are always alone. If you’re struggling to make friends, the easiest way is just to say hi and share some interesting facts about yourself. This will help you to start a conversation and find similar interests.

Study and work

Keep up-to-date with all of your work- don’t leave assignments until the last minute, use your study days to complete work as well as lesson time

Asking for help

Please don’t be afraid to ask. Whether it’s your teacher or a fellow classmate, people are always happy to help out

Positivity

Keep a positive attitude. Being positive about yourself and your work will help you to complete it to the best of your ability. There’s no place for negativity at college.

Don't be too full of yourself

There are bound to be things you don’t understand, but don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s perfectly fine not to be too perfect. You are at college to learn about your desired career, not teach it.

Keep the stress at bay

Don't allow your work to stress you out. Plan what you are going to do and when you are going to do it. Ensure that you give yourself enough breaks and although it’s important to study hard, it’s also important to socialise and have fun. Don't keep yourself stuck in all day, everyday doing work.

Goal setting

Set yourself realistic goals to achieve - whether it’s the grades you want to achieve or when you want to complete your assignments by. Make sure they are realistic so you don’t overpower yourself.

Work experience – don’t miss out

Don’t be afraid to do as much work experience as you can. The staff in the Work Experience Zone, which is located next to The Lookout, will be happy to help you sort out any course related work experience you would like to partake it. It’s great for your CV, great experience and something not to miss.

Student Services

Finally, don’t forget, if you have any issues at college or at home, the staff in Student Services (available at all three of our campuses) will be happy to help you and talk to you. Don’t be afraid to talk to them or your friends about any issues. Everyone is here to support you and that’s so encouraging and comforting to know.

Have fun

The most important thing of all. Make sure to have fun! College isn’t all about the work, it’s also about making new friends who will hopefully be there for life. So enjoy your time with them and ensure that you make the most out of your college life.

Good luck everyone. I hope you enjoy your time here at Northampton College and make the most out of this experience.
