"I studied engineering at school and knew that I wanted to learn more. The Motor Vehicle course at Northampton College looked perfect.
"I began Level 1 Fitting but went straight onto Level 2 because the teachers saw how determined I was. This was my first practical course and we began looking at a car from the base up. I learnt all about the wheels and brakes, how to take brake callipers off and replace brake pads. I also learnt how to take an engine apart – it was amazing and really beneficial to be able to see all the different parts and to learn what they were responsible for.
"I worked in a garage on and off for a while to gain some experience and asked about the opportunity of an apprenticeship. I worked hard and was offered a full Level 3 apprenticeship.
"Being the only female on the course didn’t faze me. I would say to anyone, male or female, thinking about doing this course, to go for it. Don’t let anything put you off reaching your goals. The teachers are so good, you are treated like an adult and expected to take ownership of your studies but with continued support from the teachers – if you fall behind they will help and push you on."
